I have the same problem sometimes. I use some Q-tips dipped in hydrogen peroxide and clean the inside (there could be something in there that is causing the infection i.e. lint/hair) then grab a rag and pour some of the peroxide into your naval and let it sit for a a couple minutes... this will sting a little then place the rag on it and turn over so the peroxide can run out. It should clear up soon... just do this daily until it goes away. Mine are reoccurring so I am thinking about going to the doctor soon. Answer: I would suggest you check the related link below and see if that answers your questions, don't use anything in or on your piercing that your piercer hasn't told you to use, including hydrogen peroxide. Just check the links "It's infected now what? " and "Common Sense Aftercare"

Any time you suspect you have an infection, you should seek medical help promptly. Signs of localized infections may include: Redness, swelling, pain or tenderness in the affected area, the area may feel hot to the touch, foul smell and oozing of secretions may also be present.

Do not delay in seeking treatment from your doctor or health care provider.

Simple precautions are the best way to avoid infections. Wash your hands with soap and hot water thoroughly after using the bathroom or coming into contact with things that may be dirty. Wash out minor scrapes and cuts in a similar manner promptly and bandage immediately afterward.

Again, do not delay in seeking treatment from your doctor or health care provider.

Signs of an infected piercing

Redness, discharge of green puss, swelling, tenderness and possible warm to the touch. The quickest way to resolve an infected piercing is to irrigate the piercing under warm running water while moving the jewelery back and forth through the piercing allowing the water to rinse the jewelery off. If you are using after care products to clean your piercing cease using all of them (this way we can find out if the aftercare product is causing the problem). Irrigating the piercing twice a day under warm water while moving the jewelery will rinse the puss and other matter out of the piercing. Once you have completed the rinsing, dry the piercing with clean tissue and leave it alone, don't apply anything else to the piercing. This should resolve and infected piercing within 24 to 48 hours. If it doesn't then seek medical attention.

Bacteria or improper jewelry-wearing. That is, it was either done in an unsanitary way, you haven't been properly cleaning it, or you're wearing improper jewelry or wearing proper jewelry improperly (e.g. you're wearing some long dangling piece of jewelry that's getting caught on things and it's tugging on the piercing, thereby irritating it, or you're wearing proper jewelry but you're letting your pants rub against it). Although, even in those cases, infection still means that it got dirty, not just that you irritated it.

Yes, it is very likely. Make sure to take proper aftercare steps for quite awhile after being pierced, even with proper cleaning it can get infected.

It doesn't. But maybe that's because I wash it when I shower, and dry it afterwards.

well when your belly button is very deep and you dont clean it often things can build up and get infected, what would help is fingering your belly button with a q-tip or your finger and cleaning it, if there is an infection you should see your doctor.

No. I've had my belly button pierced for eight years and never had a hernia. So I have a hard time believing that a belly button ring could cause a hernia. It can cause an infection but it can't cause a hernia.

Can a belly button get infected?

Belly button rings can cause infection very easily if not cleaned at least once a day. The best way to prevent an infection is to clean it with antibacterial soap, such as Dial, once or twice a day. Applying alcohol or peroxide can dry the skin out and help with infection, so do not use those. Do not use lotions around the belly button as this can cause a moist environment for bacteria to set in and cause infection. The last thing able to prevent an infection is to not touch the piercing until the belly button is healed. Bothering it before then can easily move germs back and forth between the ring and wound, so leave it to set before taking it out.
